S/V Defiant

Little Things Compound

May 10, 2026 - 2 minute read

When I was wedged in the forward berth locker pulling new nav light cable yesterday, I paused to be annoyed by the dangling fan cord across the locker door. I installed the fan last year temporarily to see if it would help circulate the HVAC into the rest of the cabin (it really does). Finishing it off was never a priority because it worked, and Defiant has no shortage of more important things to fix.

annoying cable dangling and a big chunk of neoprene insulation to keep the fan from rattling. Functional? Yep. Pretty? Nope.

But I had a few minutes while the heat shrink on the new spade connectors cooled, perfect time to clean this up. It wasn’t much work at all. I drilled a tiny hole, fed the cable back, added a few zip wire braces to route it at the top edge of the closet inside, and then made a pair of y connectors for the back of the existing lamp power. Then I traced and cut the neoprene so it fit the back of the fan instead of a big ugly chunk of sponge.

all tucked away and visually clean, and no more wire to catch in the door or ratty foam block

Fixing it wasn’t a big deal, it took me an extra twenty minutes tops. Each one of these little fixes is a tiny chip away at making Defiant a magnificent vessel again. The best way to eat an elephant is still one little bite at a time.
